Climate Drift is an area-level trend: it compares the last ten years of nearby frost patterns with a thirty-year baseline to show whether the local frost-free season has tended to grow longer, shorter, or stay steady. It is not a thermometer reading from your garden or a prediction for this year.

A ZIP gives a broad local reading; sharing your location gives a reading closer to your garden. We’ll send you your number as your season shifts.

What Climate Drift actually means

We use gridded weather history for the area around the location you provide. For each year, we estimate the last spring freeze, first fall freeze, and the days between them, then compare the recent decade with the longer thirty-year pattern.

The result is a direction and an estimated number of days, not an exact measurement at your latitude and longitude. Nearby hills, valleys, pavement, buildings, water, and cold-air pockets can make your garden different from the surrounding area.

What this number can and can't see

  • It estimates your area, not your bed. The finest weather history covers roughly six miles, with a broader reading used where needed. A cold-air pocket at the bottom of a slope, or the warm side of a brick wall, can be too small for that history to see.
  • Frost pockets need your eyes. Inside Harvestead, the frosts you report pull your calendar toward your own ground without letting one unusual night throw off the whole season.
  • A ZIP covers a wider area. If your ZIP spans a valley and a ridge, share your location instead for a reading closer to your garden.
  • Drift is history, not a promise. A longer recent average season does not guarantee next spring. It tells you which direction to lean, and why the printed dates keep missing.
