How to identify heat-induced blossom drop
When nighttime temperatures stay too warm or daytime heat spikes too high, pollen becomes sterile or fails to release properly, so flowers form but abort and drop without setting fruit.
Symptoms
- Flowers form normally but yellow, wither, and drop without setting fruit
- A noticeable gap in fruit production during the hottest weeks of summer
- Plant otherwise looks healthy: no leaf spotting, wilting, or discoloration

Favorable conditions
Daytime temperatures above about 90-95°F or nighttime temperatures staying above about 75°F disrupt pollen viability in tomato and pepper; similarly, cold nights below 55°F can also cause drop early in the season.
Progression
- Heat stress during flowering (Hot daytime highs or warm nights) — Pollen becomes less viable or fails to shed properly.
- Blossom abortion (Days after the heat stress) — Flowers yellow and drop without fruit set.
- Resumed fruiting (Once temperatures moderate) — New flowers set normally again.
