How to identify magnesium deficiency

Magnesium sits at the center of every chlorophyll molecule, so a shortage causes distinctive yellowing between the leaf veins on older leaves, while the veins themselves stay green.

Symptoms

  • Yellowing between leaf veins (interveinal chlorosis) on older leaves while veins stay green
  • Yellowing can progress to a marbled, mottled pattern
  • Leaf edges may curl upward as the deficiency progresses
  • Overall reduced vigor and smaller fruit

How it spreads

Not contagious; a soil fertility issue, not a pathogen.

Favorable conditions

Sandy or acidic soils that hold magnesium poorly, heavy rainfall leaching it out, or excess potassium/calcium in the soil that competes with magnesium uptake.

Progression

  • Magnesium depletion (Over the season without replenishment) — Soil magnesium falls short of demand.
  • Interveinal yellowing (On older leaves first) — Chlorophyll production drops between veins.
  • Progressive decline (If uncorrected) — Yellowing spreads and vigor/yield decline.

Organic treatment for magnesium deficiency

  1. 1. Apply Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) as a foliar spray or soil drench · low effort

    Mix 1 tablespoon Epsom salt per gallon of water and spray foliage or drench the root zone every 2-3 weeks until color improves.

    When: At first sign of interveinal yellowing

Prevention

  • Test soil periodically, especially in sandy or high-rainfall regions.
  • Amend soil with compost to improve nutrient retention.
  • Avoid excessive potassium fertilization, which can worsen magnesium uptake competition.

Easy to confuse with

Cucurbit yellow stunting disorder (viral, vector-linked, not corrected by Epsom salt), Natural late-season leaf senescence.
