How to identify phytophthora root rot

A general term for water-mold root rots affecting perennials and fruiting shrubs/trees planted in soil that stays wet, slowly killing the root system from the tips inward.

Symptoms

  • Stunted growth, sparse foliage, and off-color (yellow-to-red) leaves that don't respond to fertilizer
  • Wilting despite moist soil
  • Roots are dark brown-to-black, mushy, and the outer root layer slips off easily when pinched, exposing a thin white core
  • Gradual decline over a season or two rather than a sudden collapse

Host crops

Strawberry, Raspberry, Blueberry, Apple, Peach.

How it spreads

Lives in soil and spreads through standing or slow-draining water, moving between plants along wet drainage lines; also introduced on infected nursery stock.

Favorable conditions

Persistently wet or poorly drained soil, especially clay soils or low spots; warm soil accelerates the disease.

Progression

  • Root tip infection (Prolonged soil saturation) — Fine roots die back first, often unnoticed.
  • Progressive root loss (Weeks to months) — Larger roots decay; plant vigor declines.
  • Canopy decline (Following season(s)) — Stunting, off-color leaves, and eventual plant death.

Organic treatment for phytophthora root rot

  1. 1. Improve drainage · high effort

    Move susceptible perennials to raised beds or berms; add coarse organic matter to heavy soil.

    When: As soon as identified

  2. 2. Remove severely declined plants · medium effort

    Dig out and discard plants with rotted root systems that aren't recovering.

    When: At diagnosis

  3. 3. Reduce irrigation frequency · low effort

    Let soil dry between waterings and avoid daily shallow watering.

    When: Ongoing

Prevention

  • Never plant susceptible perennials in a low, slow-draining spot.
  • Buy certified disease-free nursery stock.
  • Use raised beds or mounded rows for berries and orchard trees in heavy soil.

Waterlogged/overwatering stress without pathogen present, Verticillium wilt on perennials.
