How to identify transplant shock
Moving a plant from a container or one location to another damages fine roots and abruptly changes light, temperature, and moisture, so the plant wilts and stalls until new roots establish.
Symptoms
- Wilting, drooping leaves shortly after transplanting despite moist soil
- Slowed or stalled growth for days to weeks
- Leaf edges may yellow or brown if stress is severe
- Usually resolves as new roots grow into surrounding soil

How it spreads
Not contagious; a physical/environmental stress response, not a pathogen.
Favorable conditions
Root disturbance during transplanting, sudden exposure to sun/wind/heat/cold compared to prior growing conditions, or delayed watering right after transplant.
Progression
- Root disturbance (At transplanting) — Fine roots are damaged or left behind in the old container/soil.
- Wilting/stall (First few days) — Plant can't take up enough water to match leaf demand.
- Recovery (1-2 weeks with good care) — New roots establish and growth resumes.
Organic treatment for transplant shock

Water deeply right after transplanting and provide a day or two of light shade cloth if transplanting into hot, sunny conditions.
When: At transplant, first 48-72 hours

Gradually expose seedlings to outdoor sun, wind, and temperature swings over 7-10 days before planting them out.
When: Before transplant day
Prevention
- Harden off seedlings gradually rather than moving them straight from indoors to the garden.
- Transplant on a cloudy day or in the evening to reduce initial water stress.
- Handle root balls gently and water in immediately.
