Nine short lessons that separate hopeful gardeners from the ones eating out of their garden every week. Real numbers, three things to do this week, the mistakes to skip.

Lesson 01

Read your zone: and know what it doesn't tell you

Name your USDA zone, understand the one thing it actually predicts, and stop buying perennials that were never going to survive your winter.

The Plant Hardiness Zone map from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) slices North America into 10°F bands based on the average coldest night of the year. That's it. That's the whole question it answers: how cold does it get here in a bad winter. It's the number that decides whether your fig tree, your artichoke crown, or your rosemary bush limps through to spring or turns into compost.

It says nothing about summer heat, humidity, day length, rainfall, or actual soil. Gardeners in zone 7 Seattle and zone 7 Atlanta are basically growing on different planets. Zone tells you about perennial survival, full stop. Frost dates are what actually run the calendar every year. Seed starting, transplanting, all of it.

The map got updated in 2023 and bumped a lot of the country a half zone warmer. Check your own local zone again if you're still planting off an old number taped inside a cabinet somewhere; a shift of even a half zone can mean a plant that used to need winter protection no longer does.

Zone spans
Each zone = a 10°F band, split into 'a' (colder half) and 'b' (warmer half).
Zone 5b
Avg min −15 to −10°F. Apples, hardy grapes, garlic, rhubarb all shrug this off.
Zone 7b
Avg min 5 to 10°F. Figs survive with wrapping, kale overwinters, rosemary is a shrub, not a houseplant.
Zone 9b
Avg min 25 to 30°F. Citrus and avocado outdoors, greens year-round.
Do this week
  • Look up your ZIP on the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map right now and write the exact zone (6a, not just "6") on your seed box in permanent marker.
  • Ask a gardener two blocks over what they grow through winter. Cities trap heat; a paved lot or south wall can run a half zone warmer than the map says for your whole neighborhood.
  • Before buying any perennial, check that it's rated at least one zone colder than yours. That's your margin when a freak cold snap shows up, and it always eventually does.
Sidestep these
  • Thinking zone tells you when to plant tomatoes. It doesn't. Frost dates do that job, and they're a different number entirely.
  • Buying a nursery plant labeled hardy for your zone but grown 500 miles south. It's never seen your winter and hasn't hardened off to it. Ask where the stock came from before assuming it will survive.

Lesson 02

Frost math: the calendar your seed packets are speaking in

Look at any seed packet and know, cold, the exact week to start it indoors, move it outside, and expect to eat it: spring and fall.

Every date on a planting guide is just backward math off two numbers: your average last spring frost (LSF) and average first fall frost (FFF). Everything else (indoor starts, transplant windows, succession sowings, when to stop planting in August) is an offset from those two dates. Learn them once and the rest of gardening calendars stop being mysterious.

Spring math for warm-season crops (tomato, pepper, eggplant): start seed indoors 6 to 8 weeks before LSF. Harden off over 7 to 10 days. Don't skip this: an entire tray of pepper seedlings can bleach white and die in one afternoon of unfiltered April sun. Transplant out 1 to 2 weeks after LSF, once soil at 4 inches reads 60°F on a probe, not a guess. Cool-season crops: peas, lettuce, spinach, brassicas. Go out as transplants 4 to 6 weeks before LSF, or direct-sown the moment the soil can be worked without clumping.

Fall planting math is where most people trip up. Take the days-to-maturity on the packet, add 14 days because fall daylight is shorter and everything grows slower, add another 14 if the crop needs real size before frost hits (a head of broccoli, not just baby greens), then count that total backward from your first fall frost. That's your last safe sow date. Miss it by even a week and October arrives with spinach the size of a quarter.

One habit worth building early: succession planting. Sow lettuce, radish, cilantro, and bush beans every 2 to 3 weeks instead of dumping the whole packet in on the same Saturday. You'll eat steadily all season instead of drowning in lettuce for two weeks and then having nothing until the next planting six weeks later.

Tomato indoor start
LSF − 6 to 8 weeks; transplant LSF + 1 to 2 weeks.
Pepper indoor start
LSF − 8 to 10 weeks. Peppers are slow and impatient gardeners always start them too late.
Peas direct sow
LSF − 4 to 6 weeks, once soil hits 40°F. They actually like the cold.
Fall broccoli sow
First fall frost minus (60 days to maturity + 14 fall-slowdown days + 14 buffer days): about 90 days back from first frost.
Do this week
  • Write your LSF and FFF on the seed box in permanent marker. Every other calculation you'll ever do starts from these two dates.
  • Build a one-page sow calendar: crop, indoor start date, transplant date, last fall sow date. Tape it to the fridge, not a folder you'll never open again.
  • Set a phone reminder every 2 weeks from LSF − 6 through FFF to check whether it's time for the next succession sowing.
Sidestep these
  • Trusting a packet that says "plant after last frost" without knowing your actual last frost date. After frost in Portland means April. After frost in Minneapolis means late May. Same words, six weeks apart.
  • Ignoring soil temperature and going by the calendar alone. Beans dropped into 50°F soil just rot in the ground. Wait for 60°F and you'll get 90%+ germination inside a week instead.

Lesson 03

Sunlight: the single most-lied-about number in gardening

Measure the actual sunlight hitting your space and stop putting tomatoes where they'll never make fruit.

Nearly every failed vegetable garden starts with a wildly generous sun guess. "It gets pretty sunny out there" is not a measurement, it's a hope. What counts is direct sun, counted in hours, on a clear day somewhere between the spring and fall equinox.

The categories aren't fuzzy, even though people treat them that way. Full sun is 6+ hours, 8 is ideal. Partial sun is 4 to 6. Partial shade is 2 to 4, and dappled light under a tree only counts as about half that. Full shade is under 2 hours and honestly not worth planting vegetables in at all. Fruiting crops (tomato, pepper, squash, melon, cucumber, bean, corn) need full sun, no negotiating. Leafy crops like lettuce, kale, chard, and spinach do fine on partial sun and actually prefer afternoon shade once summer heats up. Root crops want at least 5 hours.

Go measure it instead of guessing. Pick a clear day near an equinox, late March or late September, and note where the shadows fall at 8, 10, noon, 2, 4, and 6. Direct sun on your spot for 3 of those 6 checks puts you at partial sun minimum. A $12 sun-hour meter from a garden shop will settle any argument you're having with yourself about that shady corner.

Tomatoes / peppers
6 to 8 hours minimum. Under 6 hours means leggy plants and a handful of fruit, not a harvest.
Lettuce / spinach
4 to 6 hours; give them afternoon shade in summer or they'll bolt on you within days.
Basil
6+ hours. Under 5 hours and you get weak flavor and mildew moves in fast.
Mint / parsley / chives
3 to 5 hours is genuinely plenty. They tolerate part shade without complaint.
Do this week
  • On the next clear day, photograph your growing area at 8am, noon, and 4pm. Lay the three photos side by side and look at where the shadows actually fall.
  • Sketch your beds on paper and mark each section full, partial, or shade based on the six-check count, not a vibe.
  • Put fruiting crops in the sunniest quadrant you have and fill the rest with greens and herbs. Fighting the sun map is a losing bet every time.
Sidestep these
  • Assuming a south-facing wall automatically means full sun. A neighbor's oak thirty feet off can wipe out your morning light entirely and you won't notice until August.
  • Overestimating winter sun. A bed pulling 7 hours in June can drop to 2 hours in October once the sun angle changes. Plan your fall beds around the low winter light, not the summer memory of it.

Lesson 04

Soil first, always: the shortcut that isn't one

Understand why soil is the actual crop you're growing, and the three moves that visibly upgrade any bed in a single season.

Ask any gardener with twenty seasons behind them what they'd change about their first five years, and the same answer comes back almost every time: spend more time on soil, sooner. Soil isn't dirt that holds the plant upright. It's a living, working crowd of bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and worms that turns organic matter into plant food. Feed that crowd well and the plants mostly take care of themselves. Starve it and no amount of blue fertilizer water saves you.

There are three real levers, in this order of impact. Texture: the sand-silt-clay ratio, shifts slowly, over years, with organic matter. Never try to fix heavy clay by mixing in sand; the result is something close to concrete, and it can take a jackhammer to undo in a raised bed. Organic matter: compost, aged manure, leaf mold, worm castings. This is the fastest lever available: 1 to 2 inches on top every spring produces a measurable jump inside one growing season. pH, ideally 6.2 to 6.8 for most vegetables, gets nudged with garden lime to raise it or elemental sulfur to lower it. Test before dosing anything. Guessing on pH amendments wastes money and can overshoot badly.

The deep dive on all of this lives over on /learn/soil. The short version you can act on today: mulch heavy, compost every year, test every 2 to 3 years, and leave an established bed alone instead of rototilling it. Every time you till, you set the underground fungal network back a season, sometimes more.

Target organic matter
5 to 8% by weight. Most native soils start around 1 to 3%, so this takes real years, not one bag of compost.
Compost input
1 to 2 in on top each spring nets roughly a 1% organic-matter gain per year.
Ideal vegetable pH
6.2 to 6.8 (blueberries and potatoes want it lower, 4.5 to 6.0).
Ideal soil temp to plant warm crops
60°F at 4 in depth, measured with an actual probe. A calendar date is not a substitute.
Do this week
  • Run the jar test: fill a jar a third with soil, top with water, shake hard, wait 24 hours. Sand drops first, silt settles in the middle, clay sits on top. Now you know your starting texture.
  • Order a mail-in soil test through your local Extension office, usually $15 to $30, and ask specifically for macronutrients, micronutrients, pH, and organic matter percentage, not just an N-P-K number.
  • Lay 2 inches of finished compost over every bed this spring. Don't till it in. Let the worms and rain pull it down; that's their job, not yours.
Sidestep these
  • Buying bagged "topsoil" from a big-box store. Most of it is screened subsoil with a few wood chips thrown in, no biology, no real organic matter. Check what's actually in the compost aisle instead of assuming the bag delivers what it promises.
  • Tilling every spring to "loosen things up." You're shredding fungal networks and burning off organic matter every single pass.

Lesson 05

Water deeply, less often: how roots actually grow

Water the way that grows drought-tough roots, cuts your water bill, and heads off half the diseases most gardeners fight all summer without knowing why.

Roots follow water, plain and simple. Water shallowly every single day and roots stay parked in the top inch of soil, then the first real hot weekend cooks them and everything wilts by 2pm. Water deeply and less often and roots dive down 12 to 18 inches, into soil that stays cool and moist through a heat wave. This one change in habit is usually the difference between a hobby bed and a bed that actually feeds a household.

Aim for about an inch of water a week for most vegetables, delivered in 1 or 2 long soaks right at the root zone. Double that in a hot dry stretch. Cut it roughly in half during cool spring or fall weather. Set an empty tuna can in the bed next time you water. You'll be surprised how long a real inch actually takes to fill.

How you deliver the water matters almost as much as how much. Drip lines and soaker hoses put water on roots and keep leaves bone dry, which alone knocks down early blight, powdery mildew, and downy mildew dramatically. Overhead sprinkling is honestly the worst option for a vegetable garden. Wet leaves at dusk are a fungal open house. If overhead is your only choice, water at sunrise so leaves dry within the hour.

And mulch. Two to three inches of straw, shredded leaves, or wood chips cuts evaporation roughly in half, keeps soil temperature from swinging wildly, blocks most weeds before they start, and feeds worms as it slowly breaks down. It's about the closest thing to free money you'll find in this hobby.

Weekly water target
About 1 inch, which works out to 0.62 gal per sq ft of bed.
Deep-soak duration
Drip line: 45 to 90 min. Soaker hose: 1 to 2 hrs. Hand-watering to that depth is basically unrealistic in a real bed.
Mulch evaporation cut
2 to 3 in of organic mulch cuts evaporation roughly 50%.
Best watering time
Early morning, no contest. Late afternoon is an okay second choice if leaves still dry before dusk.
Do this week
  • Set a tuna can or a cheap rain gauge in the bed next time you water. Time how long your setup takes to fill it to 1 inch. That's your weekly run time, written down for good.
  • Mulch every bed 2 to 3 inches deep this week. Keep it pulled back an inch from plant stems or you invite rot.
  • Put one drip line or soaker hose on the biggest bed and run it off a $15 hose-bib timer. This single purchase saves more plants than anything else in a starter setup.
Sidestep these
  • "It rained yesterday" without checking the gauge. A quarter inch of drizzle doesn't reach the root zone. Sprinkling from clouds is not irrigation.
  • Watering in the evening. Cool wet leaves overnight are an invitation to every fungus in the neighborhood.
  • Watering containers on the same schedule as in-ground beds. Containers dry out 2 to 4 times faster. Check them daily once summer hits, not weekly.

Lesson 06

Crop rotation: how pests and diseases starve

Set up a simple 3 to 4 bed rotation that starves out pests and rebuilds fertility without spending a dollar.

Plant the same crop family in the same bed year after year and two things build up quietly. Soil-borne diseases specific to that family (late blight, clubroot, Fusarium wilt) accumulate in the soil itself. And overwintering pests like Colorado potato beetle, squash vine borer, and cabbage root fly come back every spring to a buffet that's exactly where they left it. Rotate by family and both problems start to collapse within a couple seasons.

The five families that matter most for a home garden: Solanaceae (tomato, pepper, potato, eggplant), Brassicaceae (cabbage, broccoli, kale, radish, turnip), Cucurbitaceae (squash, cucumber, melon, pumpkin), Fabaceae (bean, pea. The nitrogen fixers), and Alliaceae (onion, garlic, leek). Rule of thumb: keep the same family out of a bed for at least 3 years, and follow a heavy feeder with a nitrogen fixer, then a lighter feeder after that.

A working four-bed rotation looks like this. Year 1, Bed A gets tomatoes. Heavy feeders that empty out the nitrogen. Year 2, beans or peas restock what got used up. Year 3, brassicas take advantage of that restocked nitrogen as moderate feeders. Year 4, roots or alliums finish clean as light feeders. Move every family clockwise through your beds each year and you've got a system that mostly runs itself.

Minimum rotation
3 years off the same family per bed. 4 years is better if you have the space.
Nitrogen fix
A good bean crop adds roughly 40 to 70 lb N per acre back into the soil, no purchase required.
Bed count
Any number works, even one single bed split into rotated quadrants with painted stakes or paper markers.
Do this week
  • Sketch your beds on paper and give each one a letter: A, B, C, D.
  • For each bed, write out years 1 through 4 following heavy feeder, then legume, then moderate feeder, then light feeder.
  • Photograph the plan on your phone before spring planting starts. The whole rotation has to survive you forgetting what went where last year, because you will forget.
Sidestep these
  • Rotating individual crops but not families. Planting peppers where tomatoes grew last year isn't a rotation. Same family, same soil-borne diseases waiting for them.
  • Only rotating between 2 beds. That's not enough of a gap; disease pressure builds back up anyway.

Lesson 07

Companion planting: what actually works, and what's folklore

Sort the pairings backed by real mechanisms from the Pinterest folklore, and build beds that pollinate and defend themselves.

There's a lot of noise in this corner of gardening. The classic companion-planting charts that circulate online recycle claims nobody ever verified. Marigolds under everything, borage cures all. What actually holds up is narrower, and more useful once you know the reasoning behind it.

Three mechanisms genuinely work. Confusion: aromatic plants like basil, dill, cilantro, and alliums mask the scent trail pests use to find their host crop. Attraction: flowering herbs (alyssum, dill, fennel, yarrow, calendula) feed the lacewings, hoverflies, and parasitic wasps that then go eat your aphids, whiteflies, and caterpillars for you. Trap crops: nasturtiums pull aphids off your cucurbits, and blue Hubbard squash pulls squash bugs off zucchini and onto itself instead.

Pairings that actually hold up: basil with tomato, both grow better and share water needs well. Alliums like onion, chive, and garlic planted with brassicas repel cabbage moth. Nasturtium along any squash, cucumber, or melon bed. French marigolds, specifically 'Nemagold', suppress root-knot nematodes, but only after a full season established in the soil, not the day you plant them. Overrated for a small home garden: the Three Sisters as a pure productivity trick. Culturally it's beautiful and it works at scale, see Lesson 10, but per square foot in a tiny yard it usually loses to separate dedicated beds.

Alyssum radius
One 8 in alyssum plant draws hoverflies to roughly 4 sq ft of bed around it.
Marigold effect
'Nemagold' French marigolds suppress root-knot nematodes only after a full season in the ground, not immediately.
Do this week
  • Add one insectary strip per bed. A 12 in row of alyssum, dill, or yarrow that blooms right through summer.
  • Interplant basil between every 2 tomato plants. Both benefit and you get to harvest all season long.
  • Border any cucurbit bed with nasturtiums. Aphids will go there first, almost every time.
Sidestep these
  • Trusting a one-page companion planting chart without checking where it came from. A lot of them trace back to a 1970s book with no experimental basis whatsoever.
  • Planting fennel next to almost anything else. It actually inhibits most vegetables nearby. Give it its own corner and leave it there.

Lesson 08

Growing in small spaces: balconies, patios, and tight yards

Turn a balcony, a fire escape, a driveway strip, or a 4×8 corner into a real food garden: with the right crops, the right containers, and pest habits that keep tight spaces clean.

Small doesn't mean unserious. A well-run 40 sq ft of containers on a south-facing balcony can outproduce a neglected 400 sq ft backyard without much trouble at all. The rules just get stricter in a small space. Every square foot, every hour of sun, every gallon of soil has to earn its keep.

Best practices, roughly in order of impact. Chase the sun first: measure your actual direct-sun hours (see Lesson 03) and put fruiting crops in the sunniest 6+ hour spots, leafy crops in the 4-hour corners. Go up, not out: trellises, tomato cages, obelisks, and railing planters can triple your usable footprint. Size the container to the crop. An undersized pot stunts everything: 3 to 5 gal for peppers, herbs, and bush beans; 7 to 10 gal for tomatoes, eggplant, and summer squash; 12+ gal for potatoes; a 6 in windowbox is genuinely plenty for lettuce and radish. Use real potting mix, never garden soil in a container. It compacts hard, suffocates roots, and can drag in pathogens. And water and feed on a shorter clock: containers dry 2 to 4 times faster than beds and nutrients wash straight out with every watering, so check daily in summer and feed diluted fish emulsion or compost tea every 2 weeks.

Best crops for small spaces. Compact by design: cherry and patio tomatoes ('Tumbling Tom', 'Patio Choice', 'Bush Early Girl'), bush cucumbers ('Spacemaster', 'Bush Champion'), bush beans, hot and sweet peppers, dwarf eggplant ('Patio Baby'), determinate zucchini ('Astia', 'Bush Baby'). Cut-and-come-again greens. Leaf lettuce, arugula, spinach, mustard, kale, chard. Will feed a household for weeks out of one shallow container. Herbs worth the pot space: basil, parsley, cilantro, chives, mint (keep it in its own pot, always, it invades anything nearby), thyme, oregano, rosemary. Roots that fit fine: radish, baby carrots ('Paris Market', 'Little Finger'), scallions, baby beets. Vertical stars: pole beans, sugar snap peas, malabar spinach, small-fruited melons on a sturdy trellis. Skip or delay in true small space: sweet corn, sprawling watermelon, pumpkins, artichokes, asparagus. They need real ground and elbow room you probably don't have.

Pest control gets easier in a small space once you use the geometry. Isolation helps: containers three stories up on a balcony rarely see cabbage moths, squash bugs, or vine borers at all. Screening helps more: cover new brassica and cucurbit seedlings with lightweight row cover (Agribon 15) until they flower. Physical exclusion beats every spray you could buy. Keep it clean: no debris piles, no standing water in saucers breeding mosquitoes, no dropped fruit rotting between pots drawing fungus gnats and slugs. Inspect weekly, top and underside of leaves, and catch an aphid colony at 5 bugs instead of 500. A strong hose spray alone controls aphids, spider mites, and whitefly for most home growers. Companion plant tight: one basil per tomato pot, alyssum or calendula in an 8 in dish in the middle of the balcony to pull in hoverflies and lacewings. And rotate what you can, even in pots: move nightshades and cucurbits to different containers each year and refresh at least the top 3 in of potting mix between seasons.

Balcony tomato
7 to 10 gal pot, 6+ hr sun, one determinate or patio variety per pot.
Salad bowl
6 to 8 in deep windowbox, 3 to 4 lettuce plants, cut-and-come-again: feeds 2 people all spring.
Herb wall
8 pots at 1 gal each on a south wall covers a family of 4 for a year of fresh herbs.
Vertical yield
Pole beans on a 6 ft trellis produce roughly 3× the yield of bush beans in the same footprint.
Container watering
Daily in summer heat; feed diluted fish emulsion every 2 weeks since nutrients leach fast.
Row cover threshold
Cover brassicas and cucurbits from transplant until first flowers. Blocks roughly 90% of moth and beetle egg-laying.
Do this week
  • Measure your sunniest 3 sq ft and reserve it for the highest-value fruiting crop, usually a cherry tomato or pepper.
  • Set up one 10 gal pot with a trellis or cage this week. That single container tends to be the biggest producer on most balconies.
  • Buy a $10 roll of Agribon row cover and drape it over cucurbits and brassicas at transplant to skip the worst pests before they even find you.
  • Put one 6 in dish of sweet alyssum or calendula right in the middle of your setup to draw beneficials in.
Sidestep these
  • Undersizing the pot. A tomato crammed into a 3 gal pot bakes, wilts, and gives you 5 fruit. The same plant in 10 gal gives you 40 or more.
  • Using garden soil or bagged "topsoil" in containers. It compacts into something close to brick within a month. Real potting mix, always.
  • Skipping fertilizer because "the mix already has some." That starter charge lasts 4 to 6 weeks and then you're quietly starving the plant.
  • Watering overhead on a balcony. It soaks the neighbors below and invites mildew. Water at the soil, every time.

Lesson 09

Microgreens: start to harvest in 10 days

Grow nutrient-dense greens on a kitchen counter with a $20 kit and about 10 days of patience. No sun, no yard, no season required.

Microgreens are just seedlings harvested when the first true leaves show up, typically 8 to 14 days after seeding. Nothing exotic about the crops themselves: broccoli, radish, pea, sunflower, kale, arugula, kohlrabi, mustard, beet, cilantro, basil. Research out of Yale and Maryland found they carry 4 to 40 times the vitamin content of the mature plant per ounce, and grown at home they run about $2 an ounce versus $4 to $5 an ounce at the grocery store.

The whole setup fits on a countertop. You need shallow 10×20 in nursery flats. The standard '1020' trays, get some with drainage holes and some without so a solid tray sits under a mesh one for bottom-watering. A bag of seed-starting mix or coco coir, a spray bottle, and either a bright window or a $25 clip-on LED grow light. No fertilizer, no transplanting, no waiting on a season.

The workflow, one tray at a time. Fill the mesh tray with 1 to 1.5 in of pre-moistened mix and level it gently, don't compact it. Sprinkle seed heavily and evenly across the surface. Much denser than a normal garden sowing, roughly 1 oz for a full tray of small seed like broccoli or kale, closer to 1.5 oz for larger seed like pea or sunflower. Don't bury it, just press seeds into contact with the mix. Cover with a second inverted tray for 3 to 4 days of blackout. Darkness and light pressure force the seedlings to root deep and stretch tall, and misting once a day under the cover keeps things moist. Uncover, move to light 4 to 6 in above the tray, and bottom-water once a day by setting the mesh tray briefly into the solid tray holding a half inch of water, never water overhead, it invites damping-off. Harvest with sharp scissors just above the soil line once the first true leaves show and the tray looks like a little lawn, usually day 8 to 14 depending on the crop. Rinse, dry gently, refrigerate in a ventilated container, and it holds for 5 to 7 days.

Cleanliness is most of the game here. Damping-off, a soil fungus that flops seedlings overnight, and plain mold are the two real failure modes, and both trace back to wet leaves plus stagnant air. Fixes: soak seeds 4 to 8 hours before sowing and rinse well, bottom-water only, keep a small fan running nearby for airflow, and give trays a hydrogen peroxide rinse (1 tbsp per quart) between rounds. Never reuse soil for a second crop of microgreens: compost it and start clean.

Best crops to start with, ranked by ease and flavor: broccoli (mild, fast, cheap seed), pea shoots (sweet, big, forgiving, pre-soak 8 hours), radish (peppery, ready in 7 days), sunflower (nutty and dense, pre-soak 8 hours and pull the hulls off around day 4), kale, arugula, kohlrabi. Skip these until you've got the basics down: basil, chia, cress. Their mucilaginous seeds gel up and need a different technique entirely.

Seed density
10×20 tray: about 1 oz small seed (broccoli, kale, radish), about 1.5 oz large seed (pea, sunflower).
Blackout period
3 to 4 days under a covering tray. Keeps seedlings stretching upward and rooted deep.
Days to harvest

Do this week
  • Order a starter kit this week: 4 nursery '1020' trays (2 with holes, 2 solid), a bag of seed-starting mix, and an ounce each of broccoli, radish, and pea shoot seed.
  • Seed your first tray tonight. Broccoli is the most forgiving; you'll be harvesting inside 10 days.
  • Set up a weekly rotation, seeding one tray every Sunday. Within three weeks you'll have a continuous harvest instead of feast-or-famine.
  • Add a $6 bottle of hydrogen peroxide to your kit and rinse trays with it between rounds to head off mold before it starts.
Sidestep these
  • Watering from the top after day 4. It mats the stems down and invites mold. Bottom-water, no exceptions.
  • Skipping the blackout period. Seedlings without it grow spindly and topple over before they're even worth cutting.
  • Reusing potting mix for a second round. Fresh mix every single time or you're compounding pathogens right into the next crop.
  • Sowing too thin because it feels wasteful. Microgreens are meant to be a lawn, not a row. Dense seeding is what gives you that pillow of stems worth harvesting.

Lesson 10

The Three Sisters: corn, beans & squash, together

Grow the polyculture that fed the Haudenosaunee, Cherokee, Wampanoag, Hopi, and dozens of other nations for centuries, and understand the agronomy behind why it actually works.

The Three Sisters (corn (elder sister), climbing beans (middle sister), and squash (youngest sister)) is the most thoroughly documented Indigenous cropping system in the Americas, refined by Haudenosaunee, Anishinaabe, Cherokee, Wampanoag, Muscogee, Hopi, and many other nations across a huge range of climates. This isn't a myth or a garnish for a harvest display. It's a working companion system with real agronomic numbers behind it.

The mechanism is elegant. Corn provides a living pole so beans can climb without a trellis. Beans host nitrogen-fixing rhizobia on their roots, restocking the soil that heavy-feeding corn drains. A mature bean planting adds roughly 40 to 70 lb of nitrogen per acre. Sprawling squash covers the ground between them, its broad leaves shading out weeds and cutting soil evaporation, and its prickly stems discouraging raccoons and some rodents from bothering the corn.

This is backed by real data, not folklore dressed up. Cornell's Iroquois White Corn Project and several peer-reviewed studies. Postma & Lynch 2012 on complementary rooting, Zhang et al. 2014 on intercropping yield, Mt. Pleasant 2016 on Indigenous polyculture productivity. Show that a properly grown Three Sisters plot returns more total calories and more balanced nutrition per acre than the same land under corn alone, often 10 to 30% more biomass with notably higher protein and vitamin A per acre, because the three crops share light, water, and root depth on different timelines instead of competing head-on.

How to plant it at home-garden scale. Build a low mound about 18 in across and 6 in tall, spaced 4 ft apart in both directions, once soil has warmed to at least 60°F. Plant 4 to 5 corn kernels in the center of each mound, about 1 in deep. When the corn is 4 to 6 in tall, usually 2 to 3 weeks later, plant 3 to 4 pole beans in a ring 6 in out from the stalks. A week or two after that, plant 2 to 3 squash seeds around the outer edge. The staggered order isn't optional. Beans planted alongside the corn from day one will out-race and strangle it, and squash planted first shades the corn seedlings out before they get a start.

Variety choice is what makes or breaks this in a modern garden. Use a strong-stalked flour, flint, or dent corn ('Iroquois White', 'Bear Island Chippewa Flint', 'Cherokee White Eagle', 'Hopi Blue') because modern sweet corn is too short and too weak-stalked to hold a bean vine. Pair it with a true pole bean, not a bush bean: 'Cherokee Trail of Tears', 'Genuine Cornfield', 'Rio Zape'. For the third sister, use a running heirloom winter squash or pumpkin: 'Seminole', 'Cushaw', 'Hidatsa Shield Figure', 'Long Pie'. Plant at least a 10 ft × 10 ft block since corn is wind-pollinated and needs several rows together to set full ears.

Respect where this comes from. The Three Sisters is a gift from Indigenous farmers who bred these specific cultivars over thousands of years and still teach the practice today through seed keepers like Rowen White (Sierra Seeds), the Indigenous Seed Keepers Network, and Robin Wall Kimmerer's Braiding Sweetgrass. Buy seed from Indigenous-owned seed companies when you can (Ute Mountain Ute Farm & Ranch Enterprises, Native Seeds/SEARCH, Onondaga Nation) and name the origin when you teach it to someone else.

  • Plan a 10 ft × 10 ft plot and mark six mounds on 4 ft centers with stakes and a length of twine before you plant a thing.
  • Amend each mound with a shovelful of compost and a small handful of fish meal. The old Wampanoag technique of burying a small fish at each mound gave the corn its early nitrogen boost, and fish meal does the same job today.
  • Stagger the sowing with phone reminders. Corn day, corn plus 2 weeks for beans, corn plus 3 weeks for squash. The order is the whole system, don't skip it.
Sidestep these
  • Planting sweet corn as the pole. Sweet corn stalks are too short and too brittle to hold a bean vine. Use flour, flint, or dent corn only.
  • Planting bush beans instead of pole beans. Bush beans won't climb at all, and you lose the nitrogen boost timing along with it.
  • Skipping the stagger between plantings. Beans sown with the corn strangle young stalks, and squash sown first shades the corn out before it gets going.
  • Growing a single row instead of a block. Corn is wind-pollinated: one row gives you mostly empty ears. Plant a block, not a line.
