How to identify bean rust
A fungus that produces powdery, rust-orange pustules on the underside of bean leaves, easily rubbed off on a finger like actual rust dust.
Symptoms
- Small white raised spots on leaf undersides that turn rust-orange as they mature
- Powdery orange spore dust rubs off on fingers or clothing
- Heavily infected leaves yellow, curl, and drop
- Pods can develop small rust-colored pustules in severe cases

Bush bean.
How it spreads
Windborne spores travel long distances; also survives in bean debris and volunteer plants; spreads fastest in prolonged leaf wetness.
Favorable conditions
Warm days (70-80°F) with cool, humid nights and heavy dew; worse late in the season.
Progression
- First pustules (Mid-late season) — Small white-to-tan spots on leaf undersides.
- Sporulation (Days later) — Pustules turn orange and rupture, releasing spore dust.
- Defoliation (Heavy infection) — Leaves yellow and drop; yield and pod fill suffer.
Organic treatment for bean rust
- 1. Remove heavily infected leaves · low effort
Strip and discard leaves with many pustules to slow spread.
When: At first sign
- 2. Sulfur or copper spray · medium effort
Apply an OMRI-listed sulfur or copper fungicide at first pustule and repeat every 7-10 days.
When: Onset through harvest
- 3. Improve airflow · low effort
Space plants well and avoid overhead watering late in the day.
When: At planting
Prevention
- Choose rust-resistant bean varieties where available.
- Rotate beans to new ground each year.
- Remove and destroy bean debris after harvest.
Easy to confuse with
Bean spider mite stippling (no orange powder, fine webbing instead), Cedar-apple rust (different host, tree-based).
