How to identify curly top virus

A leafhopper-vectored virus common in hot, dry western regions that causes dramatic upward leaf curling, stunting, and often plant death, especially on tomato and bean.

Symptoms

  • Leaves curl sharply upward and inward, becoming thickened and leathery
  • Yellowing of leaf veins
  • Stunted, stiff, upright growth ('rugose' appearance)
  • Sudden wilting and plant death, especially in young plants

Host crops

Tomato, Pepper, Bush bean.

How it spreads

Spread by the beet leafhopper, which picks up the virus feeding on infected weeds/plants and transmits it while probing new plants; leafhoppers travel long distances on wind.

Favorable conditions

Hot, dry conditions that favor beet leafhopper migration from dried-out wild host plants into irrigated gardens.

Progression

  • Leafhopper transmission (Brief feeding/probing) — Virus introduced; symptoms follow within days to weeks.
  • Curling and stunting (Days to 2 weeks) — Upward leaf curl and stiff, stunted growth appear.
  • Collapse (Severe/young-plant infections) — Rapid wilting and plant death can follow.

Organic treatment for curly top virus

    Pull and destroy plants with confirmed symptoms; there is no cure.

    Use fine mesh row cover on young transplants, and light shade cloth can reduce leafhopper landing in hot, dry regions.

    When: From transplant through establishment

Prevention

  • Grow curly-top-tolerant tomato varieties in high-risk regions.
  • Time plantings to avoid peak beet leafhopper migration where local extension tracks it.
  • Remove nearby weeds that serve as a virus and leafhopper reservoir.

Easy to confuse with

Herbicide drift (broader field pattern, not leafhopper-linked), Aster yellows (phytoplasma, different vector).
