How to identify herbicide drift injury

Herbicide applied nearby (on a lawn, roadside, or neighboring field) drifts on wind or volatilizes in heat and lands on garden plants, causing characteristic twisting and cupping, especially from broadleaf herbicides like 2,4-D or dicamba.

Symptoms

  • New growth twists, curls, and cups downward in a corkscrew pattern
  • Leaves narrow and strap-like ('fernleaf' appearance)
  • Stems can become thickened, brittle, or hollow
  • Symptoms appear uniformly on the side of the plant facing the drift source
  • Whole rows or beds often show the same pattern simultaneously, unlike a spreading disease

How it spreads

Not contagious; caused by chemical exposure, not a pathogen. Persistent herbicide residues in contaminated compost, manure, or straw can also cause repeat injury.

Favorable conditions

Warm, windy days during or after a nearby herbicide application; volatile herbicides can drift even without wind under hot conditions.

Progression

  • Exposure (During or shortly after a nearby application) — Herbicide contacts leaf/stem tissue.
  • Distortion appears (24-72 hours later) — New growth shows twisting and cupping.
  • Recovery or decline (Weeks later) — Mild exposure often grows out; severe exposure can stunt or kill the plant.

Organic treatment for herbicide drift injury

    Keep the plant well-watered and avoid additional stress; new growth after mild drift exposure is often normal.

    Prune out badly distorted growth once new normal growth resumes.

  3. 3. Test suspect compost/manure/straw before use · medium effort

    Do a bioassay (grow a few bean or pea seedlings in the suspect material) before using compost, manure, or straw mulch from an unknown source, since persistent herbicides can pass through livestock and hay.

    When: Before applying any new organic input

If drift came from an unknown or restricted-use herbicide, avoid harvesting and eating exposed produce until identified; some herbicides carry re-entry and harvest restrictions for human safety.

Prevention

  • Talk to neighbors/applicators about spray timing and wind conditions near the garden.
  • Use windbreaks or physical barriers along a garden edge near treated areas.
  • Source compost, manure, and straw from operations that don't use persistent broadleaf herbicides (e.g., clopyralid, aminopyralid, picloram).
