How to identify downy mildew (basil)
A basil-specific water mold that causes leaf yellowing that looks like a nutrient problem at first, until the telltale gray-brown fuzz appears on the underside.
Symptoms
- Pale yellow blotches on upper leaf surfaces, often bounded by veins
- Gray-to-brown fuzzy spore growth on the corresponding leaf underside
- Leaves curl, brown, and drop; plants can be defoliated within a week
- Often mistaken at first for a nitrogen deficiency because of the diffuse yellowing

How it spreads
Seedborne (a major source in commercial seed lots) and airborne over long distances; spreads locally by wind and splashing water in humid conditions.
Favorable conditions
Warm days with high humidity and cool, damp nights; greenhouse and high-tunnel basil is especially prone due to still, humid air.
Progression
- Seed or airborne introduction (At planting or via regional spore drift) — No visible symptoms yet.
- Yellow blotching (Humid stretch) — Diffuse yellow patches appear on upper leaves.
- Sporulation (Following humid night) — Gray-brown fuzz appears on undersides.
- Collapse (Within a week) — Leaves brown and drop; plant becomes unmarketable.
Organic treatment for downy mildew (basil)
- 1. Remove and destroy infected plants · medium effort
Pull heavily infected plants; the disease spreads fast in a dense planting.
When: At first sign

Space plants further apart, prune for airflow, and avoid overhead watering, especially at night.
When: All season

Apply an OMRI-listed copper spray preventively during humid stretches.

Prevention
- Buy pathogen-tested seed or resistant basil varieties bred for downy mildew tolerance.
- Avoid overhead irrigation, especially late in the day.
- Give basil full sun and generous spacing.
Easy to confuse with
Nitrogen deficiency (uniform pale yellowing, no fuzzy underside growth), Sunscald or heat stress.
