How to identify nitrogen deficiency
Nitrogen is mobile within the plant, so when supply runs short, the plant pulls it from older leaves to support new growth, causing uniform yellowing that starts at the bottom of the plant.
Symptoms
- Uniform pale yellowing (not blotchy or spotted) starting on the oldest, lowest leaves
- Yellowing progresses upward as the deficiency worsens
- Overall stunted growth and thin, spindly stems
- Reduced yield and smaller fruit/heads

Corn, Cabbage, Tomato, Lettuce.
How it spreads
Not contagious; a soil fertility issue, not a pathogen.
Favorable conditions
Sandy or heavily leached soils, cold soil that slows microbial nitrogen release, or a season without added nitrogen-rich compost/fertilizer.
Progression
- Nitrogen depletion (Over weeks without replenishment) — Available soil nitrogen runs low relative to plant demand.
- Lower-leaf yellowing (As deficiency develops) — Nitrogen is remobilized from old leaves to new growth.
- Whole-plant decline (If uncorrected) — Yellowing progresses upward; growth and yield drop.
Organic treatment for nitrogen deficiency
