How to identify fruit cracking

A dry spell followed by heavy rain or watering causes the fruit's interior to swell faster than the skin can stretch, splitting the skin in radial or concentric rings.

Symptoms

  • Radial cracks running from the stem end outward, or concentric rings around the stem
  • Cracks can be shallow (cosmetic) or deep enough to expose the flesh
  • Exposed flesh invites mold, rot, and insect feeding

How it spreads

Not contagious; a physical response to uneven water supply, not a pathogen, though cracks readily invite secondary rot organisms.

Progression

  • Drought stress (Extended dry period) — Fruit growth slows and skin toughens slightly.

  • Secondary rot (Days after cracking) — Exposed flesh molds or attracts pests if not harvested.
