How to identify salt burn

Excess soluble salts in the soil, from over-fertilizing, road salt runoff, or naturally saline soil/water, pull moisture out of roots and scorch leaf margins.

Symptoms

  • Brown, crispy scorching along leaf margins and tips
  • Stunted growth and a general wilted look even with adequate soil moisture
  • White crusty salt deposits sometimes visible on soil surface
  • Seedlings especially sensitive: poor germination or seedling collapse after fertilizing too heavily at seeding

Host crops

Lettuce, Bush bean, Carrot, Strawberry.

How it spreads

Not contagious; a chemical/osmotic effect on roots, not a pathogen.

Favorable conditions

Over-application of fertilizer (especially fresh manure or synthetic fertilizer close to roots), irrigation with salty/hard water, or road salt runoff near the garden.

Progression

  • Salt accumulation (After over-fertilizing or salty water use) — Soluble salts build up in the root zone.
  • Root water stress (Following days) — Roots struggle to take up water against the salt gradient.
  • Leaf scorch (Days to a week later) — Marginal browning and wilting appear.

Organic treatment for salt burn

  1. 1. Leach the soil with clean water · medium effort

    Water deeply and repeatedly with low-salt water to flush excess salts below the root zone.

    When: As soon as identified

  2. 2. Stop fertilizing until recovery · low effort

    Hold off on additional fertilizer, especially fresh manure, until new growth looks normal.

    When: Immediately

Prevention

  • Follow fertilizer label rates; more is not better and can injure roots.
  • Compost fresh manure before applying it near plant roots.
  • Keep de-icing salt away from garden beds and route salty runoff elsewhere.
  • Test irrigation water if salt burn recurs without a fertilizer cause.

Easy to confuse with

Tipburn (calcium-related, not tied to fertilizer/salt history), Drought stress alone.
