How to identify tipburn
Fast-growing inner leaves of heading crops outpace the plant's ability to deliver calcium to the leaf margin, so the very edge of the leaf dies while the rest stays healthy.
Symptoms
- Thin, brown, papery browning along the leaf margin, especially on young inner leaves
- Affected tissue is dry and crisp, not water-soaked
- Can lead to secondary bacterial soft rot if the dead tissue stays wet
- Worse in the fastest-growing heads/varieties

How it spreads
Not contagious; a physiological calcium-delivery problem tied to rapid growth, high heat, and humidity, not a pathogen.
Favorable conditions
Rapid growth combined with high heat, high humidity, or fluctuating soil moisture that limits calcium movement to the fastest-growing leaf margins.
Progression
- Rapid inner-leaf growth (Warm growth spurt) — New leaf tissue outpaces calcium delivery.
- Marginal browning (Days later) — Thin brown edge appears on young leaves.
- Secondary rot risk (If tissue stays wet) — Dead margin tissue can invite bacterial soft rot.
Organic treatment for tipburn

Keep soil evenly moist and provide light shade cloth during heat spikes to slow the growth surge that outpaces calcium delivery.

Prevention
