How to identify sulfur deficiency

Sulfur deficiency looks a lot like nitrogen deficiency, an overall pale yellowing, but unlike nitrogen it shows up on the youngest leaves first since sulfur is less mobile within the plant.

Symptoms

  • Uniform pale yellowing starting on the newest, youngest leaves (opposite pattern from nitrogen deficiency)
  • Stunted, spindly growth
  • Thin stems and delayed maturity

Host crops

Cabbage, Broccoli, Onion, Corn.

How it spreads

Not contagious; a soil fertility issue, not a pathogen.

Favorable conditions

Sandy, low-organic-matter soils, especially in regions with reduced atmospheric sulfur deposition; more common where high-analysis fertilizers with little sulfur content are used repeatedly.

Progression

  • Sulfur shortfall (Over the season in low-sulfur soil) — Available sulfur runs short relative to demand.
  • Young-leaf yellowing (As new leaves emerge) — Newest growth pales first, distinguishing it from nitrogen deficiency.
  • Stunted growth (If uncorrected) — Overall growth and yield decline.

Organic treatment for sulfur deficiency

    Regular compost application supplies sulfur along with other nutrients as it breaks down.

    When: Ongoing, each season

  2. 2. Apply gypsum (calcium sulfate) if confirmed by soil test · medium effort

    Work an OMRI-listed gypsum product into the soil per soil test recommendation; it supplies sulfur without changing pH.

    When: Based on soil test

Prevention

  • Test soil periodically, especially in sandy, low-organic-matter beds.
  • Maintain regular compost additions to build overall soil fertility.

Easy to confuse with

Nitrogen deficiency (yellowing starts on oldest leaves, not youngest), Natural pale new growth in some varieties before greening up.
