How to identify aphid
Aphids are soft-bodied, pear-shaped insects (green, black, gray, or pink) that cluster on new growth and leaf undersides. They pierce plant tissue and suck sap, then excrete sticky 'honeydew' that grows sooty mold and draws ants.
Crops attacked by aphid
Kale, Broccoli, Pepper, Lettuce, Bean, Tomato, Cucumber.
Piercing-sucking mouthparts drain sap from tender new growth. Leaves curl, yellow, and stunt; buds distort; honeydew coats the leaves below.
Life cycle
- Overwintering eggs (Late fall → early spring) — Dormant on woody hosts; no damage yet.
- Wingless females (spring) (Early season) — Rapid live-birth colonies form on new growth.
- Winged migrants (summer) (Mid-summer) — Fly to new hosts; colonies explode in a week.
- Sexual generation (Fall) — Females lay overwintering eggs; feeding slows.
Natural, organic aphid control

Spray colonies off with a sharp jet from a hose, undersides of leaves included. Repeat every 2-3 days.

Plant sweet alyssum, dill, and yarrow nearby. Do not spray broad-spectrum products or you kill the beneficials too.

Prevention
- Nitrogen-heavy fertilizer = tender growth aphids love. Ease off.
- Interplant sweet alyssum and yarrow to keep beneficials on-site.
- Reflective mulch (silver plastic) confuses winged migrants.
