Organic pest control — IPM for real gardens

Lesson 01

Thresholds & IPM — when to actually intervene

Stop reacting to every chewed leaf. Know the number of pests per plant that costs you real yield, and only spend action above it.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the framework every land-grant university teaches: scout first, decide against a threshold, then act with the least-disruptive tool that works. It grew out of California cotton work in the 1950s after broad-spectrum sprays wiped out predators and pests came roaring back worse. The lesson stuck — kill everything and you inherit the survivors.

The threshold is the pest density at which the damage costs more than the treatment. In a home garden the economic threshold is fuzzy, but the aesthetic threshold is not — one hornworm on a tomato is a fine breakfast for a paper wasp; ten is a stripped plant. Learn the numbers for the pests that actually hit you, and stop spraying for the ones you can tolerate.

Scouting is the whole game. Walk the beds twice a week, flip five random leaves per crop, and check the undersides — 90% of soft-bodied pests hide there. Log what you see with a date. Patterns show up in three weeks that you would never spot with your gut.

  • Print a one-line scouting log: date, crop, pest, count, action. Tape it inside the shed door.
  • Pick 3 crops you're most invested in (usually tomato, brassica, cucurbit) and memorise their two worst pests.
  • Set a rule: no spray without a count. If you can't name a number, the answer is scout again in 3 days.
Sidestep these
  • Spraying at first sight. Most soft-bodied pests get crushed by beneficials within 7–10 days of noticing them if you leave the predators alone.
  • Treating aesthetic damage on leaves you're not eating. Ragged squash leaves in August are almost never a real yield hit.

Lesson 02

Identify before you spray

Tell chewing from sucking from mining from disease from deficiency at a glance — because the wrong ID means the wrong fix.

Damage pattern is the fastest ID tool you own. Ragged holes with green pellets nearby = a caterpillar (Bt works). Stippled bronze speckling with fine webbing on the underside = spider mites (Bt does nothing — you need water blasts, oil, or predatory mites). Wandering pale tunnels between leaf layers = leafminer (adults lay eggs on top; foliar sprays miss the larvae inside — pull and destroy leaves). Sooty black film + ants marching up the stem = a sap-sucker producing honeydew (aphid, whitefly, scale).

Rule out disease and deficiency first. Yellowing between veins with green veins = interveinal chlorosis — usually iron or magnesium lockout from bad pH, not a pest. Concentric brown rings on lower tomato leaves = early blight, a fungus. Silvery leaf undersides on squash = powdery mildew starting, not thrips. Reaching for insecticide when the problem is fungal or nutritional is the most common wasted spray in a home garden.

A 10× hand lens costs $8 and is the highest-leverage tool in the pest kit. Most misidentifications disappear when you actually look at what's on the leaf.

Sidestep these
  • Blaming aphids for curl that's actually herbicide drift from a neighbor's lawn.
  • Treating 'mite damage' that is actually early nutrient deficiency on new growth.

Lesson 03

Prevention stack — the free 80%

Build a garden that pests barely notice: right variety, right timing, trap crops, ruthless sanitation.

Resistant varieties are the biggest lever nobody uses. 'Iron Lady' and 'Defiant' tomatoes shrug off early and late blight; 'County Fair 87' cucumber resists mosaic virus; 'Cherokee Purple' does not. Read the tag — letters after the name are the disease-resistance code (V = verticillium, F = fusarium, N = nematode, T = tobacco mosaic, A = alternaria).

Timing beats spray. Squash vine borer moths fly in a narrow window (June in most of the US — track your growing degree-days with a state extension calendar). Cover squash with row cover from transplant until first female flowers, and you skip the entire pest. Same trick with cabbage moths: cover brassicas from day 1 through heading.

Trap crops pull pests off your money crops. Blue Hubbard squash planted 20 ft from the main patch pulls squash bugs and cucumber beetles like a magnet — check it daily and destroy adults. Nasturtiums around brassicas pull aphids off the kale. Radish planted alongside cucurbits pulls flea beetles onto the radish leaves.

Sanitation is the boring one that works. Fallen fruit is a squash bug nursery. Old cabbage stumps overwinter cabbage aphids. Pull and hot-compost or bag anything that finished producing — every week you leave a spent plant standing is another 7 days of pest breeding.

  • Plant one Blue Hubbard squash per 100 sq ft of cucurbits as a sacrificial trap.
Sidestep these
  • Leaving row cover on cucurbits after female flowers open — you starve the pollinators and get no fruit.
  • Composting diseased tomato foliage in a cold pile — spores survive, come back next year.

Lesson 04

Beneficials & habitat — hire the workforce

Build the insectary strip that keeps a standing army of predators so most 'outbreaks' get eaten before you notice.

Every soft-bodied pest has a predator that wants nothing else. Ladybug (Hippodamia convergens) larvae eat 40–50 aphids a day. Green lacewing (Chrysoperla) larvae are called 'aphid lions' for a reason. Parasitic wasps (Aphidius, Trichogramma, braconids) inject eggs into caterpillars and aphids — those white cocoons on the back of a hornworm are Cotesia congregata pupae; leave that hornworm on the plant, you're raising 100 wasps that hunt next week.

Adult beneficials need nectar and pollen from small flowers — big flowers don't work because the mouth parts don't fit. Sweet alyssum, dill, cilantro (bolted), fennel, yarrow, cosmos, buckwheat, and the tiny umbel flowers of parsnip family all feed them. A 12-inch insectary strip along one edge of every bed doubles or triples resident predator populations (research from Michigan State and UC Davis).

The 1:100 predator:prey ratio is roughly what commercial biocontrol houses release. In a real garden with habitat, you rarely have to buy in — you just have to not spray anything broad-spectrum for two seasons so the population stabilises.

Do this week
  • Broadcast sweet alyssum seed along the sunny edge of every bed in spring; it self-sows and blooms all season.
  • Let one cilantro, dill, and parsley plant per bed bolt — the umbel flowers feed hoverflies and parasitic wasps.
  • If you see a hornworm with white 'grains of rice' on its back, leave it — it's already a parasitic-wasp nursery.
Sidestep these
  • Buying ladybugs and releasing them into a hot dry garden at noon — they fly away in an hour. Release at dusk, pre-water the plants, and only after you have actual aphids to hold them.
  • Spraying pyrethrin or spinosad on an insectary strip. Broad-spectrum organics still kill beneficials.

Lesson 05

Organic sprays — the OMRI toolkit

Know which OMRI-listed spray handles which pest, the actual mixing rate, and the pre-harvest interval — no more guessing at the bottle.

Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) is a bacterial toxin that only affects specific insect larvae. Bt kurstaki (Btk) — sold as Dipel, Thuricide — kills caterpillars only (cabbage worm, hornworm, corn earworm, loopers). Bt israelensis (Bti) — sold as Mosquito Bits/Dunks — kills fungus gnat and mosquito larvae only. Bt tenebrionis targets Colorado potato beetle larvae. Bt does nothing to adults, nothing to non-target insects, and nothing to bees. Reapply after rain — UV breaks it down in 3–7 days.

Spinosad (Entrust, Monterey Garden Insect Spray) is a soil-actinomycete toxin. Excellent on caterpillars, thrips, leafminers, spotted-wing drosophila. Toxic to bees while wet — spray at dusk when bees are off flowers. Rotate: many populations have developed resistance from over-use. OMRI-listed products cap at ~6 apps per crop per season.

Neem oil / azadirachtin works as an anti-feedant and growth disruptor on soft bodies (aphids, whitefly, mites). Mix 1–2 Tbsp/gal water + 1 tsp mild soap as emulsifier. Never spray in full sun above 85°F — leaf burn. Insecticidal soap (potassium salts of fatty acids) is contact-only, no residual — must hit the pest directly. Kaolin clay (Surround WP) is a physical particle barrier for cucumber beetle, plum curculio, and stink bug. Iron phosphate (Sluggo) is the only bait-form molluscicide safe around pets, kids, and worms.

Do this week
  • Buy Btk in liquid form once a year — it loses potency at 12 months even sealed. Store cool and dark.
  • Write REI (re-entry interval) and PHI (pre-harvest interval) on the bottle with a marker.
  • Spray at dusk, 6–7 pm. Cooler leaves, no sun burn, no pollinators, better coverage.
Sidestep these
  • Neem oil + tomato leaves + 90°F afternoon sun = crispy leaves. Move to sundown always.
  • Spraying spinosad on flowering cucurbits at 10 a.m. — kills the squash bees that are pollinating your fruit.
  • Assuming 'organic' means 'safe for everything'. Pyrethrin, spinosad, and neem all kill beneficials and fish.

Lesson 06

Row cover, netting & physical exclusion

Match mesh size to pest and skip the whole spray decision.

Physical exclusion is the highest-ROI pest tool ever invented. If the pest can't reach the leaf, none of the rest of this section matters. The trick is matching mesh size to the pest — too tight and you cook the crop in summer heat; too loose and you're just adding shade cloth.

Standard floating row cover (Agribon AG-19, 0.55 oz/yd²) blocks moths, most beetles, and holds ~4°F frost protection while passing ~85% light. Insect netting (ProtekNet or equivalent, ~25×25 threads/in) blocks flea beetle and cabbage root fly with no heat gain. Micro-mesh (~350 microns) is needed for thrips and leafminer adults but reduces light 25–30% — reserve it for spring/fall.

Hoop it, don't drape it. Draped cover abrades leaves in wind, and any pest already on the plant is now trapped inside with no predators. Set 9-gauge wire or ½-inch PVC hoops 3–4 ft apart, drape the cover, weigh the edges with sandbags or 2×4s, and check underneath weekly. The rule for pollinated crops (squash, cucumber, melon): cover from transplant to first female flower, then remove or hand-pollinate.

  • Leaving row cover on cucurbits through flowering — zero pollination, zero fruit.
  • Using row cover over brassicas where you grew brassicas last year — cabbage root fly emerges from the soil inside your cover.

Lesson 07

Vertebrate pressure — deer, rabbits, voles, groundhogs

One well-built fence prevents the losses ten seasons of sprays never will.

Deer are the number-one yield loss in most of the US east of the Rockies. They can clear an 8-ft fence flat-footed but rarely will jump a fence they can't see over into — a 6-ft solid privacy fence works, or two parallel 4-ft fences 4 ft apart works (they won't jump the gap). Fishing line at 30" and 60" on posts around a small garden confuses them enough to walk away. Repellents (Plantskydd, Bobbex) work for 2–4 weeks and must be rotated.

Rabbits need a 24" tall chicken-wire or 1" hardware-cloth fence with the bottom 6" bent outward and buried under mulch — they push, they don't jump. Groundhogs demand more: 3-ft fence with the bottom 12" buried in an L outward, plus an unstable top 12" (loose, floppy) they can't climb. Electric single strand at 4" and 10" off the ground stops both.

Voles work underground and hit fruit tree bark and root crops (sweet potato, carrot, beet). Hardware cloth (¼") laid under raised beds and around fruit tree trunks with a 3-inch gap of gravel mulch (not shredded bark) is the fix. Moles eat grubs, not roots — leave them alone unless tunneling is destroying a bed.

  • Around fruit trees, wrap the lower 24" of trunk with ¼" hardware cloth going 2" into the soil (vole + rabbit gnaw protection).
  • For deer, run two rows of fishing line before spending fence money — free and often enough for a suburban plot.
Sidestep these
  • Bending the fence bottom inward (rabbits push under) instead of outward.
  • Using bird netting on tree trunks — snakes and songbirds tangle. Use hardware cloth cages.

Lesson 08

Resistance management & spray records

Rotate modes of action so your sprays keep working — and keep a 3-line spray log so you can prove nothing hit pollinator windows.

Populations evolve. Spray the same product on the same pest for 3–5 generations and you select for the survivors. Spinosad-resistant thrips, Bt-resistant diamondback moth, and pyrethroid-resistant flea beetles are all documented in commercial fields. In a home garden the fix is trivial: never spray the same mode of action (MOA) twice in a row on the same pest.

IRAC (Insecticide Resistance Action Committee) numbers each active ingredient by MOA — Bt is Group 11, spinosad is Group 5, neem/azadirachtin is Group UN, insecticidal soap is Group UN, pyrethrin is Group 3. Alternate between at least two IRAC groups within a generation. The label lists the group number in a colored box.

Keep a 3-line spray log: date, product + rate, pest + crop. It takes 20 seconds and does three things — proves resistance rotation, records the pre-harvest interval, and shows you what actually worked next season. A pocket notebook in the shed is enough.

Never spray a flowering crop in the middle of the day. Bees are on flowers 8 a.m.–6 p.m. Even 'bee-safe' organics are toxic while wet. Spray at dusk, and skip entirely when temperature is above 85°F or wind is over 10 mph.

  • Spraying spinosad three weekends in a row — you've just bred a resistant population and killed pollinators every Saturday.
  • Skipping the record. Six months from now you won't remember which spray worked on which pest — and neither will anyone helping you troubleshoot.
