How to identify canada goose

A large, grazing waterfowl that forms grass-cropping flocks near ponds, lawns, and garden edges. Canada geese are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, and resident (non-migratory) flocks are managed through permits, not backyard lethal control.

Crops attacked by canada goose

Lawn/turf, Lettuce, Young vegetable transplants, Clover cover crop.

Grazes grass and tender greens down to the crown, leaves large amounts of droppings, and can trample or clip seedlings in beds near open water or lawn.

Life cycle

  • Winter flocking (Winter) — Large flocks graze open turf and waste grain fields.
  • Nesting (Early spring) — Pairs claim territory near water; aggressive if approached.
  • Goslings foraging (Late spring–summer) — Family groups graze constantly, including garden edges near water.
  • Molt & flocking (Summer–fall) — Flightless molting geese concentrate heavily on open grass and beds.

Natural, organic canada goose control

  1. 1. Break sightlines to water with fencing or plantings · medium effort

Geese prefer to walk to and from water with a clear escape route; a low fence, hedge, or tall grass strip along the shoreline discourages them from grazing inland.

    When: Before spring

  2. 2. Fence garden beds · medium effort

A 2.5-3 ft fence is usually enough to keep grazing geese off vegetable beds.

    When: At planting

  3. 3. Haze consistently, never during molt if flightless young are present · medium effort

Dogs (on leash, trained to herd not harm), noise, or reflective tape can move flocks along; be aware flightless molting geese and goslings can't flee, so avoid cornering them.

    When: As flocks arrive

Fastest-fix products

  • Low perimeter fencing (2.5-3 ft)Geese are reluctant to hop fences to reach food when a ground barrier is present. · Farm/hardware stores
  • Reflective tape / flags near shorelineCheap deterrent for lawns adjacent to ponds. · Amazon, farm stores

Prevention

  • Let a strip of tall grass or shrubs grow along pond edges to remove the open sightline geese prefer.
  • Never feed geese bread or grain; it draws bigger flocks and is bad for their health.
  • Contact your state wildlife agency for permitted egg-addling or removal if a resident flock becomes a chronic problem: don't act unilaterally on a protected species.
