How to identify crow & other birds
Crows, starlings, robins, and sparrows are the garden's most clever thieves. They pull sprouting corn and sunflower seedlings for the seed, strip berry bushes clean, and peck holes in tomatoes during dry spells for moisture. Crows and starlings are especially cunning: they watch your routine, learn when you are not around, and will return in flocks until the crop is gone.

Life cycle
- Spring nesting (March-May) — Seed and sprout pulling. Whole corn and pea rows lifted the week they germinate.
- Feeding fledglings (May-July) — Most aggressive garden raids of the year; ripening berries and cherries stripped.
- Post-fledging flocks (July-Sept) — Flocks of crows, starlings and blackbirds hit ripe corn, grapes and figs in hundreds.
- Winter roosts (Oct-Feb) — Big communal roosts work stored crops, brassica beds and fallen fruit.

Prevention
- Delay tomato water stress. A nearby birdbath cuts tomato peck damage dramatically (they wanted water).
- Harvest ripe berries daily during peak; leaving fruit on the plant advertises to flocks.
- Combine two visual deterrents (kite + reflective tape) and rotate positions weekly.
