How to identify cucumber beetle
A quarter-inch yellow beetle with black stripes (striped) or black spots (spotted) that swarms cucurbits. Worse than its feeding is the bacterial wilt it carries — a single infected beetle can doom a plant.
Crops attacked by cucumber beetle
Cucumber, Zucchini, Squash, Pumpkin, Melon.
Chews holes in leaves, flowers, and young fruit — but the real threat is bacterial wilt (Erwinia tracheiphila), spread through beetle mouthparts and feces. Infected plants wilt from a single vine and die within a week.
Life cycle
- Overwintering adult (Winter) — Hides in leaf litter and weed edges.
- Emergence (Late spring) — Swarms seedlings and transplants — the most dangerous window.
- Larva in soil (Summer) — Feeds on cucurbit roots (minor).
- New adults (Mid-late summer) — Second-generation feeding + wilt transmission.
Natural, organic cucumber beetle control

Cover transplants immediately. Remove only when the first female (fruit-bearing) flowers open, since pollinators must reach them.

Prevention
