How to identify cucumber beetle
A quarter-inch yellow beetle with black stripes (striped) or black spots (spotted) that swarms cucurbits. Worse than its feeding is the bacterial wilt it carries. A single infected beetle can doom a plant.
Crops attacked by cucumber beetle
Cucumber, Zucchini, Squash, Pumpkin, Melon.
Chews holes in leaves, flowers, and young fruit, but the real threat is bacterial wilt (Erwinia tracheiphila), spread through beetle mouthparts and feces. Infected plants wilt from a single vine and die within a week.
Life cycle
- Overwintering adult (Winter) — Hides in leaf litter and weed edges.
- Emergence (Late spring) — Swarms seedlings and transplants. The most dangerous window.
- Larva in soil (Summer) — Feeds on cucurbit roots (minor).
- New adults (Mid-late summer) — Second-generation feeding + wilt transmission.
Natural, organic cucumber beetle control

Cover transplants immediately. Remove only when the first female (fruit-bearing) flowers open, since pollinators must reach them.
When: Transplant → flowering

Prevention
- Delay planting 1-2 weeks past your neighbors'. Beetles concentrate on their gardens first.
