How to identify white-tailed deer

A 100-250 lb browser active dawn and dusk. A single doe can eat 5-7 lb of foliage a night and clip whole beds to stubs.

Lettuce, Bean, Sweet corn, Strawberry, Apple, Peach, Roses, Hosta.

Ragged torn stems (no lower teeth, they tear rather than clip), hoof prints in wet soil, droppings. Rub-damage on young trees in fall.

Fawn (Late spring) — Minor; nurses through summer.
Yearling & doe (Year-round) — Constant browse pressure; peaks in drought and winter.
Rut (buck rubs) (Sept-Nov) — Antler rubbing girdles young fruit trees overnight.

1. 8 ft woven-wire fence · high effort
The only method that reliably ends deer damage. Slanted 6 ft fences also work by confusing depth perception.

2. Motion-activated sprinklers (ScareCrow / Orbit Yard Enforcer) · low effort
Blast of cold water triggers flight response. Move every 5-7 days so deer do not habituate.
When: Nightly
3. Rotating repellent sprays · medium effort
Rotate two repellents (Bobbex, Plantskydd, Liquid Fence) every 2-3 weeks. Reapply after rain. Single-product regimens fail within a season.
When: Every 2-3 weeks
4. Plant deer-resistant borders · low effort
Ring beds with strongly-scented plants: lavender, russian sage, catmint, alliums, daffodils. Not a barrier, but reduces incidental browse.
When: At bed prep

Fence at planting, not after damage appears — once deer find your garden, they return nightly.
Wrap young fruit-tree trunks with plastic spiral guards through fall/winter to stop antler rub.
Time-share with local hunting programs where legal; a managed deer herd is a smaller one.
