How to identify white-tailed deer

The white-tailed deer is a quiet, 100-250 lb browser that appears at dawn and dusk like a ghost at the edge of the yard. A single doe can eat 5-7 lb of foliage a night, and once she finds a reliable bed she will return nightly, teaching her fawns the same route. Look for ragged, torn stems (deer have no lower front teeth, so they tear rather than clip), neat hoof prints in soft soil, and a sharp browse line on shrubs and trees.

Crops attacked by white-tailed deer

Lettuce, Bean, Sweet corn, Strawberry, Apple, Peach, Roses, Hosta.

Ragged torn stems (no lower teeth, they tear rather than clip), hoof prints in wet soil, droppings. Rub-damage on young trees in fall.

Life cycle

  • Fawn (Late spring) — Minor; nurses through summer.
  • Yearling & doe (Year-round) — Constant browse pressure; peaks in drought and winter.
  • Rut (buck rubs) (Sept-Nov) — Antler rubbing girdles young fruit trees overnight.
  • Winter browse (Dec-March) — With forage gone they strip evergreens, buds and fruit-tree twigs to a clean browse line.

Natural, organic white-tailed deer control

  1. 1. 8 ft woven-wire fence · high effort

The only method that reliably ends deer damage. Slanted 6 ft fences also work by confusing depth perception.

    When: Once, permanent

  2. 2. Motion-activated sprinklers (ScareCrow / Orbit Yard Enforcer) · low effort

Blast of cold water triggers flight response. Move every 5-7 days so deer do not habituate.

    When: Nightly

  3. 3. Rotating repellent sprays · medium effort

Rotate two repellents (Bobbex, Plantskydd, Liquid Fence) every 2-3 weeks. Reapply after rain. Single-product regimens fail within a season.

    When: Every 2-3 weeks

  4. 4. Plant deer-resistant borders · low effort

Ring beds with strongly-scented plants: lavender, russian sage, catmint, alliums, daffodils. Not a barrier, but reduces incidental browse.

    When: At bed prep

Fastest-fix products

  • Orbit Yard Enforcer motion sprinklerBest-reviewed motion sprinkler for deer; combines water burst with sound. · Amazon, hardware stores
  • Plantskydd repellent (granular + spray)Blood-meal-based; longest-lasting on the market (3-4 months granular). · Amazon, garden centers
  • 7 ft polypropylene deer nettingCheapest full-height barrier for small plots; nearly invisible from a distance. · Amazon, farm supply

Prevention

  • Fence at planting, not after damage appears, once deer find your garden, they return nightly.
  • Wrap young fruit-tree trunks with plastic spiral guards through fall/winter to stop antler rub.
  • Time-share with local hunting programs where legal; a managed deer herd is a smaller one.
