How to identify pocket gopher
The pocket gopher is a solitary, underground engineer that spends nearly its whole life in a dark tunnel system. It has huge front teeth, small eyes, and fur-lined cheek pouches that give it its name. A gopher can pull a healthy carrot, potato, or young fruit tree straight down into its burrow. Plant and all. Leaving a fan-shaped mound of soil with a plugged hole to one side. Its damage is sudden and absolute, and it defends its tunnel aggressively from intruders.

Whole plants disappear pulled downward. Fan-shaped or crescent soil mounds with a plugged hole to one side (not a chimney like a mole).
Life cycle
- Breeding (Late winter-spring) — 1-3 litters a year; fresh fan-shaped mounds mark expansion.
- Juveniles disperse (May-June) — Young leave the natal burrow and open new tunnel systems 100+ ft away.
- Peak tunneling (Summer) — Roots of carrots, potatoes and young trees clipped from below; plants wilt overnight.
- Winter (active, no hibernation) (Nov-Feb) — Deeper tunnels; they keep feeding on roots and stored tubers all winter.
Natural, organic pocket gopher control

Line planting holes for perennials and fruit trees with 3/4-inch galvanized gopher wire baskets. Roots grow through; gophers cannot enter.

Locate a fresh main tunnel (not lateral push-up); set two traps facing opposite directions inside. Cover the opening. Check daily.

Staple 1/2-inch hardware cloth across the entire bottom of raised beds before filling with soil.

Prevention
- Bury a 12-in-deep hardware-cloth apron around the vegetable garden.
