How to identify pocket gopher
Subterranean rodent found across the western and central US. Pulls whole plants underground from below — a healthy plant vanishes stem-and-all in seconds.
Crops attacked by pocket gopher
Carrot, Potato, Onion, Any bulb, Young fruit-tree roots, Alfalfa.
Whole plants disappear pulled downward. Fan-shaped or crescent soil mounds with a plugged hole to one side (not a chimney like a mole).
Life cycle
- Solitary (Year-round) — One gopher per burrow system; territorial.
- Breeding (Spring) — New juveniles disperse and start their own burrows.

Prevention
