How to identify pocket gopher

Subterranean rodent found across the western and central US. Pulls whole plants underground from below — a healthy plant vanishes stem-and-all in seconds.

Crops attacked by pocket gopher

Carrot, Potato, Onion, Any bulb, Young fruit-tree roots, Alfalfa.

Whole plants disappear pulled downward. Fan-shaped or crescent soil mounds with a plugged hole to one side (not a chimney like a mole).

Life cycle

  • Solitary (Year-round) — One gopher per burrow system; territorial.
  • Breeding (Spring) — New juveniles disperse and start their own burrows.

Natural, organic pocket gopher control

  1. 1. Gopher wire baskets around root balls · medium effort

Line planting holes for perennials and fruit trees with 3/4-inch galvanized gopher wire baskets. Roots grow through; gophers cannot enter.

    When: At planting

  2. 2. Cinch or Macabee gopher traps · high effort

Locate a fresh main tunnel (not lateral push-up); set two traps facing opposite directions inside. Cover the opening. Check daily.

    When: Fresh mound appears

  3. 3. Raised beds lined with hardware cloth · medium effort

Staple 1/2-inch hardware cloth across the entire bottom of raised beds before filling with soil.

    When: Bed construction

  4. 4. Encourage barn owls & gopher snakes · low effort

Owl boxes and undisturbed field edges support natural predators — the only sustainable long-term control.

    When: Anytime
