How to identify opossum
North America's only marsupial: cat-sized, gray, with a pointed white face and naked tail. Mostly a friend (it eats ticks, slugs, roaches, and carrion) but it will help itself to ripe fruit, corn, compost, and chicken eggs at night.

Opportunistic nighttime foraging: bites out of ripe fruit near the ground, knocked-over compost and trash, scattered pet food, and eggs eaten in the coop. Rarely digs beds or eats foliage.
Life cycle
- Winter foraging (Winter) — Raids compost, pet food, and unsecured trash; frostbitten ears/tail common.
- Breeding & pouch young (Late winter → spring) — Females den under sheds and decks near a food source.
- Young riding / dispersing (Summer) — Family groups increase fruit and coop pressure.
- Second litter & fattening (Late summer → fall) — Peak raiding of ripe fruit, corn, and fallen produce.
Natural, organic opossum control
- 1. Remove the food, not the animal · low effort
Secure compost in a closed bin, bring in pet food, pick fallen fruit nightly, latch trash cans. Opossums leave when the buffet closes.

Use 1/2 in hardware cloth (not chicken wire) and a raccoon-proof latch; opossums take eggs and chicks through gaps.

Skirt decks and sheds with hardware cloth buried 6 in: after confirming no animal is inside.

Opossums eat huge numbers of ticks and slugs and rarely carry rabies. If it's not raiding, leaving it be is a net win.

Prevention
- No fallen fruit, pet food, or open compost after dark.
- Skirt decks, sheds, and crawl spaces before denning season.
