How to identify cottontail rabbit
The eastern cottontail is a compact, big-eyed grazer that moves through gardens at dawn and dusk, clipping tender plants at ground level with clean, scissor-like bites. A single doe can raise three to six litters per year, and once a young rabbit finds your lettuce row it will return until the row is gone. They rarely stray far from dense brush or a fence line, which is where they hide during the day.

Life cycle

- Juveniles disperse (April-Oct) — Peak seedling loss: young rabbits test every tender green in reach.
- Adults (3-6 litters/yr) (Year-round) — Steady clipping of lettuce, beans and peas below 24 in.
- Winter bark gnawing (Dec-Feb) — With greens gone they girdle young fruit trees and shrubs at snow height.

Prevention
- Wrap fruit-tree trunks with hardware cloth or spiral tree guards to 24 in through winter.
- Remove leaf-pile hiding spots at the garden perimeter.
- Encourage natural predators (owl boxes, unmowed hawk perches).
