Procyon lotor

How to identify raccoon
Highly intelligent, dexterous nocturnal omnivore. Notorious for pulling down sweet corn the night before you plan to pick.
Crops attacked by raccoon
Sweet corn, Melon, Grape, Strawberry, Tomato, Chicken eggs.
Corn ears torn open and eaten in place; melons broken open with holes clawed in the top; whole rows knocked down in one night.
Life cycle
- Kits (Spring) — Mother's foraging range expands to feed young.
- Adult (Year-round) — Constant foraging pressure; peaks late summer on sweet corn.
Natural, organic raccoon control
- 1. Electric fence: two strands at 6 in and 12 in · medium effort
Solar charger + two hot wires stops raccoons cold. Turn on 2 weeks before corn ripens.
When: Before corn ripens
- 2. Motion-activated sprinklers · low effort
Same units that work on deer also work on raccoons — the burst of cold water triggers flight.
When: Nightly during ripening
- 3. Radio + light at the corn patch · low effort
Talk-radio station left on overnight plus a work light spooks raccoons for the critical 2-week ripening window.
When: Silking → harvest
- 4. Harvest at peak, do not wait · low effort
Once one ear is milk-stage, pick daily. Raccoons check nightly.
When: Peak silking
