How to identify skunk
The striped skunk is a slow-moving nocturnal digger that eats grubs, insects, eggs, and ripe produce. Most 'skunk damage' in a garden is actually grub hunting — cone-shaped holes in beds and rolled-back turf — which means the real problem is the grubs.
Crops attacked by skunk

Digs 3-4 in cone-shaped holes and flips sod at night hunting grubs and cutworms; also eats low ripe fruit, sweet corn ears near the ground, and raids unprotected nests and coops.
Life cycle
- Winter torpor (Winter) — Communal denning under sheds and decks; little foraging.
- Breeding & denning (Late winter → spring) — Males roam widely; digging resumes as soil thaws.
- Kits foraging with mother (Summer) — Peak lawn and bed digging as grubs mature.
- Fall fattening (Fall) — Heavy digging plus fruit and corn raiding before denning.
Natural, organic skunk control
- 1. Fix the grubs and the skunk leaves · medium effort
Apply beneficial nematodes or milky spore to grub-infested turf; no grubs, no reason to dig.
When: Late summer / early fall
- 2. Light and motion deterrents · low effort
Skunks avoid bright light and startle easily — a motion light or sprinkler on target beds usually moves them along in a few nights.
When: During active digging
- 3. Exclude den sites (with a one-way door) · high effort
Skirt sheds and decks with buried hardware cloth. Install a one-way door first and confirm the den is empty — never seal an animal in, especially with kits.
When: Fall, outside kit season
- 4. Secure food and coops · medium effort
1/2 in hardware cloth on runs, latched trash, no pet food outdoors, pick fallen fruit.
When: Immediately

Prevention
- Keep turf grub counts low — that's 90% of skunk garden damage.
- Skirt every deck, shed, and crawl space before denning season.
- No pet food, open compost, or fallen fruit after dark.
- Never corner one; back away slowly. Call licensed wildlife control if a skunk seems sick or is denned with young.
