How to identify slugs & snails

Soft-bodied mollusks that feed at night in moist conditions. Slime trails on soil or leaves in the morning are the smoking gun. Prefer tender greens, seedlings, and fruit lying on the soil.

Crops attacked by slugs & snails

Lettuce, Spinach, Strawberry, Basil, Cabbage seedling, Bean seedling.

Rasping mouthparts chew large irregular holes in leaves overnight. Small seedlings disappear whole; strawberries are hollowed from below.

Life cycle

  • Egg cluster (Spring & fall) — Pearl-like clusters of 20-30 eggs in moist soil under boards, mulch, and pots.
  • Juvenile (2-3 weeks after eggs) — Small but feeding immediately.
  • Adult (Year-round in mild climates) — Full-size adults live 1-2 years; feed every mild, damp night.

Natural, organic slugs & snails control

  1. 1. Beer trap · low effort

Sink a tuna can level with the soil; fill halfway with beer. Slugs crawl in and drown. Empty and refill every 2 days.

    When: Nightly during outbreaks

  2. 2. Iron phosphate bait (Sluggo) · low effort

Scatter pellets on the soil per label. Slugs eat it and stop feeding immediately; die in 3-6 days. Safe around kids, pets, and wildlife.

    When: Heavy pressure

  3. 3. Copper tape rings · medium effort

Wrap raised bed edges or individual pots. Copper reacts with slug slime and delivers a mild shock.

    When: Set once, permanent

  4. 4. Handpick at night with a headlamp · medium effort

The most satisfying option. Wear gloves; drop into soapy water.

    When: Warm, damp nights
