How to identify spider mite
Nearly invisible arachnids (not insects) that live on leaf undersides and spin fine webbing between stems. Thrive in hot, dry, dusty conditions and reproduce explosively in a week.
Crops attacked by spider mite
Bean, Tomato, Strawberry, Cucumber, Melon, Basil.
Pierce individual cells and drain them, leaving stippled yellow-white flecks on leaves. Heavy damage bronzes the whole leaf; webbing appears when populations peak.
Life cycle
- Egg (3-5 days at 80°F) — Pinhead eggs on leaf undersides.
- Larva → nymph → adult (5-14 days total) — Feeds throughout; a female lays 100+ eggs in her lifetime.
- Overwintering female (Fall onward) — Turns red and shelters in bark or debris.
Natural, organic spider mite control
- 1. Strong water blast under leaves · low effort
Aim a hard jet at leaf undersides every 2-3 days for a week. Physically dislodges mites and raises humidity (which they hate).
When: First sign of stippling

Mist plants morning and evening. Mites explode in dry conditions and crash in humid ones.
When: Hot, dry weather

Release predator mites — they eat spider mites and nothing else. Contain outbreaks in 1-2 weeks.
When: Established infestation

Coat leaf undersides at dusk. Repeat 3 times, 5 days apart, to catch newly hatched mites.

Prevention
- Avoid dusty conditions along paths — dust suppresses their predators.
