How to identify squirrel
The gray squirrel is an agile, quick-footed climber and digger that treats gardens like a personal pantry. It raids tomatoes for moisture, digs up bulbs, and makes off with corn, peaches, and strawberries. Often taking a single bite and leaving the rest. Where there are mature trees, squirrels are nearly impossible to exclude, so the best strategy is to make your garden less attractive than the surrounding woods.
Crops attacked by squirrel
Tomato, Strawberry, Corn, Apple, Peach, Sunflower, Fall bulbs.
Half-eaten tomatoes on the vine (looking for water in dry spells), missing corn ears, dug-up bulbs. Tooth marks are clean paired grooves.
Life cycle
- Spring litter (Feb-April) — Nursing mothers dig containers and raised beds for anything stored or sprouting.
- Summer litter & juveniles (June-Aug) — Peak fruit theft. Half-eaten tomatoes, strawberries and peaches left on the ground.
- Fall caching (Sept-Nov) — Heavy digging in beds, pots and bulb plantings to bury nuts.
- Winter foraging (Dec-Feb) — No hibernation: they raid stored squash, bird feeders and newly planted bulbs on mild days.
Natural, organic squirrel control
- 1. Bird netting over ripening fruit · medium effort
Drape 1/4-inch mesh over tomato cages and strawberry beds. Weight the edges: squirrels find any gap.
When: First blush

A shallow dish of water 30 ft from the garden dramatically cuts tomato damage in drought (they were after moisture, not fruit).
When: Summer heat
- 3. Cayenne pepper on bulbs & seedlings · low effort
Mix red-pepper flakes into soil at bulb planting or dust onto seedlings. Squirrels avoid the burn.
When: Bulb planting
- 4. Chicken-wire cage over strawberry beds · medium effort
Build a low frame with 1-inch chicken wire on all sides and top. The only method that fully protects a berry patch.

Prevention
- Do not use squirrel bird feeders adjacent to the garden. You are training them to visit.
- Prune tree limbs overhanging the garden; they use branches as highways.
- Cover freshly planted bulbs with a mesh screen for 2 weeks until scent fades.
